5 Things You Probably Didn’t Realize You Need as a New Homeowner

You’re about to buy your first home; what an exciting time! You’re probably planning the design and furniture layout, maybe even made a few trips to TJ Maxx or Target. Decorating is one of the most fun parts about being a homeowner; you can design it however you want and nobody can tell you no. Before you get too carried away with all the fun things, I want to provide a list of a few items you shouldn’t forget before you move in. I bought my first home in 2015 (oh boy, it seems like it was just the other day). I had lots of help from family and friends, but there were a few things I didn’t realize I needed until I actually moved in. So here’s my helpful heads up for you.

  1. Trash Can: I’ve always thought it’s so irritating how expensive something is that you literally put trash in, but hey we all need one. My sister and I oddly have the same kitchen trash can in our houses, so I added a very similar one because we both like it.
  2. Cleaning Rags: My family bought me plenty of cleaning products when I first bought my house, but what I didn’t have was cleaning rags. Another odd item you don’t necessarily think of. I like these microfiber rags because they are good for everything. I’ve been known to attach them to my swifter because you can rewash them easily.
  3. Tool Kit: When I first moved out I bought a cute tiny hammer and thought I would be set. I could hang up pictures at least! My boyfriend (now husband) loved to make fun of my tiny little hammer, so I suggest buying a tool kit with everything you’ll ACTUALLY need.
  4. Drapes/Window Coverings: Another item that I definitely did not consider the importance of before moving in. The neighbors may or may not mind if you’ve also forgot this item, but I think it’s best to get window coverings up sooner than later! I’m personally a fan of curtains instead of blinds, but I think it depends on the size of window and what room it’s in. I currently have these drapes in two different rooms of our home in different sizes and I absolutely love them. They block a ton of light (even the white ones). I found a really good deal on my curtain rods at Ross, but if you’re wanting to quickly and easily order some online then these rods are a great option. They have great reviews and come in two different adjustable lengths.
  5. Coffee Pot: I mostly added this one because when I was moving out I asked for my now in-laws to get me a coffee pot as my house warming present. I was adamant about having a very simple coffee pot with no fluff. Well long story short, they ignored my wishes and got me a programmable one. I’m so happy they did because there’s pretty much nothing better than waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

That sums up most of the things I never thought about needing when I first bought my home. You may forget little things, but it’s still so fun being a homeowner. I loved the experience and hope you enjoy the process as well!
