How to Create an Industrial Design in Your Home

There are so many ways to style your home, but a personal favorite of mine is the industrial look. It’s clean, moody, edgy, dark, neutral….. pretty much everything I love in a design. Most of my family members know to never buy me anything with color in it because odds are I won’t ever display it in the house. I decided to make a list of a few ways to bring this design theme into your home.

Keep it neutral. Stick with white, tan, browns as a base palette and then bring in darker colors throughout the design. I suggest this because industrial style tends to have a lot of darker colors and it can make a small home feel even smaller. If you do have lofty-like ceilings then go bold with black and gray. I don’t have tall ceilings in my home, but I still chose to paint the wall behind my television black (and I LOVE it!).

Open floor plan. Since this style is stemmed from industrial buildings that tend to be large open spaces, it’s best to keep an open flow throughout your home. We don’t all have large lofts, but luckily open floor plans have already been a very popular trend in homes.

industrialLighting. Edison lights have become widely popular in the last few years and I think it’s a great look. They don’t always give off as much light as you may require, so use regular bulbs while still keeping the look with this awesome pendant light. I love the black exterior with the pop of gold on the inside.

Mix Materials. I personally love the look of exposed pipes, but it’s definitely not always a functional design in all homes. Instead I decorate with wood and metal as much as possible. At my last house, my husband welded me a copper pipe that held our toilet paper (I wish I could find the picture of it –it was awesome). I did find a black one on Amazon that is super similar to the one I had.

Leather Furniture. I’ve seen a lot of industrial style homes have large leather couches and I think it looks great. I’m personally not a fan of leather couches (it’s either too cold in the winter or I stick to it in the summer), but I do like to bring leather elements into the design. If you’re like me then I recommend utilizing accent pillows like these faux leather pillow covers.

Use what you have. Brick wall or fireplace? Exposed beams? Concrete floors or counters? You name it! There are so many ways you can bring in preexisting elements from your home design. Of course, this is much easier to find with older homes, but still a possibility with newer builds.

My husband and I love industrial style because it’s the perfect combination that brings in hints of masculinity combined with simple and neutral design. If you have any questions or advice about industrial design, I’d love to hear more from you in the comments below.
